All blogs and chat rooms in China must register with the government by the end of the month, Beijing announced this week. Web sites are already required to be registered, and can be blocked and monitored. Now blogs and other forums will be subject to the same censorship. “The Internet has profited many people,” said the Ministry of Information Industry on its Web site, “but it also has brought many problems, such as sex, violence, and feudal superstitions and other harmful information that has seriously poisoned people’s spirits.”
