New abortion debate

Washington, D.C.
The Supreme Court waded back into the controversy over abortion this week, by agreeing to review a ruling that struck down a New Hampshire parental-notification law. An appeals court nullified the 2003 law because it didn’t provide an exception for medical emergencies. An ACLU spokesman welcomed the Supreme Court review, scheduled for the fall, saying it would “put to rest any lingering questions” about a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. But New Hampshire lawmakers, in a legal memo to the court, said the case was not about abortion rights, but about the right of minors to “the benefit of parental involvement.”
