Cricket détente

Pakistani and Indian leaders watched a cricket game together this week and proclaimed their progress toward peace “irreversible.” Last week, the two countries opened the first bus line across the dividing line in the disputed province of Kashmir. And now, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have agreed to treat the dividing line in disputed Kashmir as a “soft border” and allow more bilateral trade and travel. “It needs two hands to clap,” Musharraf said. “We may be too old to tango, but my hand is extended to clap.” Still, the final decisions on Kashmir’s sovereignty and water rights are a long way from being resolved.
