Terror drill turns too real
The week's news at a glance.
Hagen, Germany
A dozen volunteers were injured during a terrorist-attack simulation this week, when a smoke bomb touched off a fire. Nearly 1,000 police, rescue workers, and train employees were practicing how to respond to an explosion on a crowded train. Suddenly, a firefighter noticed real flames engulfing one of the luggage cars. “Thick smoke filled two of the cars that held volunteers pretending to be corpses,” said Horst Wisotzki, head of the fire crew. His team responded quickly and got everyone out. Twelve volunteers and six firemen were treated for smoke inhalation.
