Castros riches
The week's news at a glance.
Havana
Cuban leader Fidel Castro lashed out at Forbes magazine for listing him among the world’s wealthiest rulers. Castro said it was unfair to compare him to the “thieves and plunderers” running other countries. The Cuban Embassy in Mexico called the report a “clumsy slander” by “an American magazine of decaying credibility,” and “a repugnant example of the campaign of lies” being orchestrated by Washington against Castro. Forbes said it calculated Castro’s net worth to be $550 million, based on the estimated value of state-owned companies he controlled.
