Schoolroom rampage
The week's news at a glance.
Red Lake, Minn.
A teenager killed five fellow students, a teacher, and a security guard at a Minnesota high school this week, in the deadliest school shooting since the 1999 Columbine massacre. Students said Jeff Weise, 17, was “grinning and waving” as he blasted away. Lance Crowe, 15, was shot in the hand. He said he hit the floor thinking, “I don’t want to die,” then watched as Weise fired his last shot, killing himself. Police said that before going to the school, which is on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, Weise killed his grandfather—a tribal police officer—and his grandfather’s girlfriend. Police believe Weise used his grandfather’s guns in the rampage. A classmate, 17-year-old Sondra Hegstrom, said Weise was into Goth culture and “talked about death all the time.”
