Governor finally inaugurated
The week's news at a glance.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico emerged from a bitter, two-month election dispute this week when Anibal Acevedo Vila was sworn in as the island’s new governor. His opponent, former governor Pedro Rossello, had questioned thousands of ballots counted for Acevedo Vila—enough to tip the result. But Rossello’s court challenge failed, and a recount gave Acevedo Vila 48.4 percent of the vote, making him the winner by a fraction of a percentage point. Even after election officials certified the result, Rossello refused to recognize the legitimacy of Acevedo Vila’s victory, and he declined an invitation to the inauguration.
