Threat against U.S.
The week's news at a glance.
Bombay
The U.S. Consulate and American Center in Bombay were closed this week because of an unspecified terrorist threat. The U.S. Embassy in Delhi warned that Americans in Bombay, India’s commercial center, should be particularly vigilant. “Facilities associated with the U.S. or locations where U.S. citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, and public areas, could be targeted,” the embassy said. The State Department did not say what group was suspected in the threats. In 2002, an attack on the American cultural center in Calcutta killed five Indians; India blamed a Pakistani-backed militant group linked to the Kashmir separatist movement.
