Jailhouse riot
The week's news at a glance.
Piraquara, Brazil
An uprising at a juvenile detention center to protest poor conditions turned into a battle among rival inmates that left seven teenagers dead. More than 150 inmates took over the Sao Francisco Education Center last week, setting fires, breaking windows, and ripping iron bars off the walls. “They had no demands,” said local official Roque Zimmerman. “They talked generically of poor treatment, but they don’t say by whom.” Instead, the young men attacked one another. “It was a massacre by companions,” said Zimmerman. “They shouted, ‘Traitors have to die.’”
