Fighting over garbage
The week's news at a glance.
Toronto
Canadian newspapers lashed out at Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry this week over his campaign position on garbage. During a recent visit to Michigan, Kerry vowed to stop Canadian cities from trucking their refuse to landfills in the U.S. The promise went over fine around Detroit, where Toronto sends 140 truckloads of refuse a day and residents have complained about the noise and stench. But the Toronto Star said in an editorial that Kerry was trying to attract votes by stirring up “new hostilities” between the U.S. and Canada, and a columnist for the National Post said Kerry had established himself as the “anti-Canadian candidate.”
