Longer school hours
The week's news at a glance.
London
British elementary schools will extend their hours to match those of working parents, the government said this week. Schools will be open from 8
A.M.
to 6
P.M.
About two-thirds of elementary schools already offer after-school programs so kids don’t have to go home to empty houses. Under the new plan, the government will fund additional sports and arts programs for the late afternoon hours in all schools. During those extra hours, the schools will also be open to other community members. The public will have use of playing fields, gyms, and even school computers. Typical hours for elementary schools are 9 to 3.
