Hillary to speak
The week's news at a glance.
Boston
Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has soothed angry allies by inviting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to speak at the party’s national convention, which convenes July 26. Party officials, reportedly worried the former first lady might upstage their presidential nominee, had left Clinton off the list of speakers, and asked her to take the stage only briefly in a joint appearance with other women senators. Judith Hope, a major party fundraiser, called the decision an insult to “every woman in the Democratic Party” and, “frankly, very stupid.” The Kerry campaign quickly stepped in and arranged for Clinton to introduce her husband, former president Bill Clinton, to kick off the four-day event.
