Bratwurst protected
The week's news at a glance.
Erfurt, Germany
It’s finally official: Only bratwurst actually produced in Thuringia can be marked as Thuringian bratwurst. Brats are sold and eaten all over Germany, but the original, Thuringian recipe is widely considered the classic. Now, after an eight-year legal battle, it has received the same legal protection afforded by the E.U. to Parma ham and Champagne. “This makes sure the sausages are very fresh,” said Thuringian sausage magnate Rainer Wagner. Locals celebrated in a massive street party in the Thuringian provincial capital.
