Shiites vs. Sunnis
The week's news at a glance.
Karachi, Pakistan
Shiites rioted in Karachi this week after a bomb went off at a Shiite mosque, killing at least 20 people. Some 10,000 people attended the funeral for the victims, and several hundred of them began throwing rocks at police, burning cars, and trashing American fast-food restaurants. The mosque bombing, the second in less than a month, came just a day after the drive-by shooting of a prominent Sunni cleric. Militant elements of the majority Sunnis have been clashing with minority Shiites in Karachi for weeks, and the Pakistani government said it feared a general outbreak of sectarian violence.
