London
British archaeologists this week found the wreckage of a World War II plane that went down after saving Buckingham Palace. During the Battle of Britain, when hundreds of German planes were bombing London, pilot Ray Holmes saw a Dornier bomber headed for the palace. Out of ammunition, he steered his Hurricane into the bomber’s tail, sending the Dornier into a wild spin that ended in a crash at Victoria Station. Holmes parachuted out of his own damaged plane as it plummeted toward Buckingham Palace Road. Now 89, he was present at the ceremony to unearth the twisted engine. “It’s such a mess that it is hard to realize that it came out of the airplane,” Holmes said.
