Tragedy at Playland
The week's news at a glance.
Rye, N.Y.
A 7-year-old girl was killed last week when she was hurled off a whirling amusement park ride in New York. Friends told police that the girl, Stephanie Dieudonne, had been on the ride, the Mind Scrambler, several times that day, growing more daring each time. On her last turn, she apparently wriggled out from under a safety bar so that she could kneel on the seat as the spiderlike contraption twirled. The girl’s father, Guerdy Dieudonne, was admitted to a hospital, suffering from shock and depression. “I can’t take this,” he said. “My heart is empty.”
