Civil war threatens
The week's news at a glance.
Batumi, Georgia
Authorities in the separatist Georgian province of Adzharia this week blew up the three bridges that link the region with the rest of the country. “We are expecting war,” said separatist leader Aslan Abashidze. Adzharia is home to a Russian military base as well as a major oil transit port, and Georgian officials have accused Russia of supporting Adzharia’s attempts to secede. Two other separatist regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, have broken away from Georgia, with Russian backing.
