A gruesome message
The week's news at a glance.
El Progreso, Honduras
Honduran police found a severed head on a park bench in the town of El Progreso last week, and said it was the latest warning to President Ricardo Maduro to call off a crackdown on street gangs. A note beside the head said, “Maduro, old man, we are so hungry we are eating people.” It was the 10th severed head discovered since the crackdown began, nine months ago. The government has rounded up hundreds of suspects, in an attempt to end a wave of gang violence estimated to have killed 2,200 people since 1998.
