Beijing
The Chinese government put out a report this week claiming it had made great strides in the protection of human rights. The document cited new constitutional amendments guaranteeing citizens’ rights, new laws limiting police powers, and a rise in the standard of living. The report was intended as “a rebuttal to the distortion and condemnation by foreign anti-China forces,” the government said. The U.S. recently proposed a U.N. resolution condemning China for human-rights violations, including the jailing of dissidents. U.S. officials have introduced such a resolution nearly every year since the killing of pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in 1989, but none have been adopted.
