Widow asks for 9/11 money
The week's news at a glance.
New York
The widow of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter murdered in Pakistan two years ago, has filed an appeal for a share of the 9/11 victims’ fund. The administrator of the compensation fund, Kenneth Feinberg, expressed sympathy for Mariane Pearl, but said that Congress had only authorized him to disperse money to people directly affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Pearl is also pressing Congress to officially offer compensation to her and her son, Adam, who is almost 2, and to other relatives of al Qaida victims killed after Sept. 11. “This whole bizarre thing of associating somebody’s death and money is very difficult,” she said. “Whatever my emotions, I have to think of my son.”
