Water taxi capsizes
The week's news at a glance.
Baltimore
One person was killed this week and three others were missing after a water taxi capsized in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The Lady D Seaport Taxi rolled over in a sudden blast of gale-force wind. The 25 tourists on board were tossed into walls “like laundry in a dryer,” said passenger Eric Jahnsen. Navy Reserve sailors training nearby rushed to help, as survivors clinging to the hull screamed, “There’s kids underneath!” The reservists used the ramp on their landing craft to lift the taxi’s side and free three victims trapped inside. Sailors jumped into the frigid water to rescue them. “People will be alive for generations because of you,” Fire Chief William Goodwin told the reservists.
