President dies in crash
The week's news at a glance.
Skopje, Macedonia
The president of Macedonia died in a plane crash last week, on the very day his country applied to join the European Union. Boris Trajkovsky was a pro-Western statesman who had managed to calm the ethnic tension between Macedonia’s Slavs and Albanians when civil war threatened in 2001. “Trajkovsky’s death is a great loss for all of us,” said Ali Ahmeti, leader of an ethnic Albanian party. “We all want this country to be led by someone who has respect for all of the people of Macedonia.” Trajkovsky was on his way to an economic conference in Bosnia when his plane went down in bad weather.
