Al Qaida threatens
The week's news at a glance.
Doha, Qatar
Al-Jazeera this week aired an audiotape purportedly from al Qaida that threatened more terrorist attacks against the West. “The Islamic nation which sent you the New York and Washington brigades has taken a firm decision to send you successive brigades to sow death and aspire to paradise,” the speaker says. He says that President Bush is lying about the situation in Afghanistan, and that U.S. forces have not destroyed al Qaida’s leadership. French President Jacques Chirac also comes in for criticism over France’s recent ban on wearing Islamic head scarves in schools. The ban is called “another example of the Crusader envy that the Westerners have against Muslims.”
