Lottery tragedy
The week's news at a glance.
Elwood, Ind.
Carl Atwood, 73, couldn’t believe his luck when he won $57,000 last week in an Indiana lottery game being taped for television. “I never expected to be leaving the show with this amount of money,” he said. “Now I can purchase a very nice car.” Hours later, Atwood left his house for a walk to the Elwood grocery store where he’d bought the winning ticket. A truck ran him down in the road, killing him. The show, Hoosier Millionaire, aired as scheduled two days later. Lottery officials said Atwood’s family would be invited to choose someone to take his place in the drawing for the $1 million grand prize.
