Port-au-Prince
Thousands marched through Haiti’s capital this week, shouting for President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to resign. Students threw rocks at police who tried to break up one protest. On another day, two people were wounded by gunfire as mourners carrying the coffin of a demonstrator killed on Jan. 7 marched toward the presidential palace. Forty-seven people have died in rising unrest since September. Opposition groups have accused Aristide of corruption, insisting that he step down. “The opposition will not negotiate with Aristide,” politician Serge Gilles said. Aristide, who was overthrown in 1991 but returned to power after a U.S. invasion, has vowed to serve until his term ends, in 2006.
