Free condoms
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
The government of Washington, D.C., is planning to put dispensers loaded with free condoms in some of its offices to help prevent AIDS, The Washington Post reported this week. More than 50 plain white dispensers will be installed in the lobbies of the human-services, motor-vehicles, and public-works departments, as well as in the D.C. Housing Authority. “They’re going to be as common as water fountains,” said Ivan Torres, interim director of the city’s HIV/AIDS Administration. Critics said D.C. was wasting its time and that only counseling, treatment, and persuading people to have sex with fewer partners would stem the spread of AIDS.
