Blaming Israel
The week's news at a glance.
Brussels
Europeans think that Israel is the greatest threat to world peace, according to an E.U. survey. Almost 60 percent of respondents from the 15 E.U. countries told Eurobarometer researchers that they considered Israel a threat. By contrast, only 53 percent said that of Iran and North Korea—the same percentage that named the United States a threat to peace. Israeli Cabinet minister Natan Sharansky said the negative press coverage of Israel across Europe was tantamount to “rampant brainwashing.” He said the survey showed that “behind the ‘political’ criticism of Israel lies nothing other than pure anti-Semitism.” Violence against Jews has risen sharply across the Continent over the past three years.
