Probe targets mayor
The week's news at a glance.
Philadelphia
Philadelphia Mayor John Street, who is locked in a bitter fight for re-election, is a “subject” of a federal corruption investigation, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported this week. Federal law-enforcement sources confirmed the investigation several days after local police found a surveillance device in Street’s office. With the election just weeks away, Street spokesman Frank Keel demanded that the Republican-controlled U.S. Justice Department explain why it planted the bug. He accused Republicans of trying to influence the election. “Is the Republican Party capable of dirty tricks?” he said. “I think that is well documented.”
