Grizzly lover mauled
The week's news at a glance.
Katmai National Park, Alaska
A self-taught bear expert and his girlfriend were mauled to death last week by a grizzly bear in Alaska. The sound of the attack was captured on a video camera found in the couple’s tent. Timothy Treadwell, 46, screams, “I’m being killed out here!” His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, yells, “Play dead!” Moments later, she urges Treadwell to fight back, and he asks her to hit the bear with a pan. Then the tape ends. Treadwell co-wrote a book in 1997 called Among Grizzlies. He had spent the last 13 summers wandering the Alaskan wilderness, drawn by what he said was a special kinship with bears. He sought them out, sometimes getting close enough to touch them, and believed they would never harm him. “He was a bear whisperer,” a friend said.
