The week's news at a glance.
Lisbon
Temperatures over 100 degrees roasted southern Europe this week, causing wildfires and shriveling crops. Fires in Spain killed at least seven people and burned up thousands of acres of farmland. More than a million Spanish chickens died of heat prostration, sending the price of chicken meat soaring. Lakes across Germany turned green with algae blooms, while Italian rivers dried to trickles. France declared a drought across half the country. And Portugal declared a state of emergency to deal with forest fires raging across 15 of its 18 provinces. “This is a tragedy unlike any Portugal has known,” said Prime Minister José Manuel Durao Barroso.
