Gay marriage isn’t Catholic

The week's news at a glance.

The Vatican this week called on Catholic laypeople to oppose gay marriage. In a 12-page document, “Considerations Regarding Proposals to Give Legal Recognition to Unions Between Homosexual Persons,” the Vatican said Catholic politicians and voters should oppose measures that would give gay unions the same status as traditional marriage. Gay marriages are recognized in Belgium and the Netherlands, and Canada is moving to legalize the practice as well. Earlier this year, Pope John Paul II said the church position on the issue was not open to debate.
