Cops kill Canadian
The week's news at a glance.
Tehran
Iranian police beat up a Canadian photojournalist so badly she fell into a coma and died, Canadian officials said this week. Zahra Kazemi, an Iranian-born Canadian citizen, was arrested last month for taking pictures of the Tehran prison where prominent dissidents are jailed. She was beaten unconscious while in custody and then transferred to a hospital, where she died last week of what Iranian officials called a “brain stroke.” Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has ordered a Cabinet-level investigation into her death.
