Clintons have to pay
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
Former president Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton this week lost their bid to make the government pay their legal bills stemming from the Whitewater investigation. The Clintons said that the federal government should have covered the bulk of their bills because they were incurred responding to questions from an independent counsel. An appeals court ruled that the Justice Department would have investigated the failed Arkansas land deal anyway, so the Clintons would have run up legal fees even if Bill Clinton had not been elected president. Sen. Clinton’s financial disclosure forms indicate they still owe between $1.7 million and $6.5 million to their lawyers.
