Anarchists riot
The week's news at a glance.
Geneva
Several hundred anarchists, mostly French, smashed shops, cars, and gas stations in Geneva to protest the Group of Eight summit that was going on just across the border in Evian, France. Fearing just such an outcome, Switzerland complained when France chose the border town as the site for the G-8 summit and then sealed it off completely to protesters. With no way to get into Evian, demonstrators took over nearby Swiss towns instead. “Violent agitators carried out true urban guerrilla warfare and ravaged the center of Geneva,” said the city’s security chief, Micheline Spörri. France has donated $16 million to defray the Swiss security costs.
