Pot is chief crop
The week's news at a glance.
Rabat, Morocco
The E.U. this week gave up a losing battle and canceled a program intended to help Moroccans grow avocados or tomatoes instead of marijuana. Pasqual Moreno, head of the failed initiative, said the amount of acreage devoted to marijuana production in Morocco has been doubling every four years, largely because the illegal crop earns farmers up to 40 times what vegetables could bring. Morocco is now the world’s largest hashish exporter, sending most of its product to Europe’s 20 million dope smokers. Potheads should beware, though: Moreno told the London Guardian that Moroccan hash is often cut with goat droppings.
