Deadly plane crash
The week's news at a glance.
Trabzon, Turkey
A chartered Ukrainian plane crashed into a mountain in Turkey this week, killing all 75 people on board. The plane was carrying Spanish peacekeepers returning home after serving in Afghanistan. A few eyewitnesses said the plane burst into flames before it crashed, which would suggest a terrorist attack. But Turkish investigators said they believed that heavy fog was to blame. Ukrainian aircraft have been involved in several deadly crashes over the past few years—most recently, the horrible crash in Congo last month, when a cargo door sprang open and dozens of people were sucked out into the void.
