French police have formed a new unit specifically to investigate anti-Semitic crimes. Several recent anti-war protests in France have degenerated into ugly brawls, as demonstrators attacked Jewish students. The French people overwhelmingly support President Jacques Chirac’s stance against the war in Iraq; one-third of them go so far as to support victory for Saddam Hussein. But some of the anti-war rhetoric has been overtly anti-Semitic, accusing Jews of running U.S. policy. Demonstrators in Paris last week chanted, “Vive Chirac! Stop the Jews!” Chirac has not discussed the attacks or the chants, but his interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, has condemned them, saying French Jews deserve the same protection as French Muslims.
