Raid on Hamas
The week's news at a glance.
Gaza
Israeli troops in tanks and helicopters demolished four houses in a Gaza refugee camp this week, killing eight Palestinians and capturing one of the founders of the militant group Hamas. Mohammed Taha, 65, helped found Hamas in 1987. The group has killed hundreds of Israelis in bombings, suicide bombings, and shootings, and it rivals Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Authority for control of the territories and Palestinian loyalty. Arafat called the raid a crime, noting that one of the eight killed was a pregnant woman who was crushed to death when a house fell in on her, and another was a 14-year-old boy. Hamas vowed to keep fighting.
