Jews flee anti-Semitism
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
Jewish emigration to Israel is now at its highest level in 30 years, following far-right gains in the polls and a spate of attacks by Arabs and Muslim North Africans. “Until last year we were proud to be French,” a Jewish woman who was attacked on her way to a synagogue told Le Monde. “No longer. Now we are proud to be Jewish.” Last year 2,326 Jews left France for Israel. It’s hardly an exodus, as France still has 1.2 million Jews, but it is more than double the figure of the previous year. The trend worries French Jewish leaders since most of the emigrants are young people.
