Anti-Semitic rant shocks Canada
The week's news at a glance.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Canadian politicians and Jewish activists railed against a prominent Indian leader who praised Adolf Hitler and exclaimed, “To hell with Jews!” David Ahenakew, a senator in the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, said in a speech to native leaders that Jews were “a disease,” and that they were on the way to controlling the world before Hitler stepped in. “That’s why he fried 6 million of those guys,” he said. Stephen Harper, a leader of the Canadian Alliance party, demanded an investigation to determine whether the remarks constituted a hate crime. “I have seen a lot of vile political stuff in my life,” Harper said, “but I have never seen anything this bad.”
