Marines attacked

The week's news at a glance.

Failaka Island, Kuwait

Two Kuwaiti civilians in a pickup truck shot and killed one U.S. Marine and injured another on an island off Kuwait this week. U.S. soldiers killed the attackers. About 1,000 U.S. troops were on the island to practice live-fire urban-assault tactics, in what the Pentagon called a routine exercise unrelated to the possible invasion of Iraq. U.S. forces have held joint exercises with Kuwaiti forces annually since the end of the Gulf War. The Kuwaiti government called the incident a “terrorist attack.”
