Delayed justice

A man who tortured political prisoners for Fidel Castro was convicted last week of lying about his past to get American citizenship. Eriberto Mederos, now a frail 79-year-old, was spotted working in a Florida nursing home by an elderly Cuban exile a decade ago. Mederos could face up to six months in prison when he is sentenced in October. Prosecutors described Mederos as a “loyal minion” of Castro’s regime who delivered electroshock to dissidents at the Havana Psychiatric Hospital from 1968 to 1978. Defense lawyers said he had only followed doctors’ orders. Regina de Sosa Fonts, whose father was credited with recognizing Mederos, said the verdict showed that “America is not a place where torturers can come and hide.”
