Osama bin Laden is alive, al Qaida members told an influential Arabic newspaper editor this week. Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi, said the sources claimed that bin Laden had suffered a shrapnel wound in his left shoulder during the U.S. assault on his cave compound at Tora Bora last fall. He recovered, they said, but will not make another video simply to prove he is alive. “He will make another appearance only after his people attack the Americans again,” Atwan said. Last week, the head of German foreign intelligence, August Hanning, told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that his agency believes bin Laden is alive. “He is still the figurehead of al Qaida,” Hanning said, “but he doesn’t seem to move around much.”
