Neo-Nazi shoots at president
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
A deranged French neo-Nazi tried to kill President Jacques Chirac this week, but was arrested and taken to a psychiatric hospital. The attacker, 25-year-old Maxime Brunerie, stood in the crowd near the Arc de Triomphe during the traditional Bastille Day reviewing of the troops. As Chirac, standing in an open jeep, rode past him, Brunerie fired one errant shot from a .22 rifle, and was immediately wrestled to the ground by onlookers. In the general clamor of Bastille Day festivities, Chirac did not even notice that someone had taken a shot at him.
