Killer floods
The week's news at a glance.
New Braunfels, Texas
Thirty inches of rain fell in central and south Texas this week, flooding 48,000 homes and killing eight people. The downpours sent water rushing over Canyon Dam, and over the banks of the Guadelupe, San Antonio, Frio, and Nueces rivers. The flooding carried away houses, and scattered cars and uprooted trees in its wake. Rivers reached record levels in some places, cresting as high as 28 feet above flood stage. “There’s nothing we can do with flooding of this magnitude,” said Gary Butts, city manager in Brownwood, Texas. “This is simply an act of God.”
