Volver
A lush and feminine masterpiece.
After his male-centric Bad Education, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar is back among his favored sex, said Richard Corliss in Time. Volver, a film about a mother who returns from the dead to advise her children, is all critical gibes, bountiful cleavage, and big lipstick kisses. Almodóvar's 'œhymn to sisterhood' stars a sultry Penélope Cruz and reunites him with Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown's Carmen Maura. Cruz's hardworking mom is resplendent in big hair, thick eyeliner, and buttocks pads.
