My Super Ex-Girlfriend

A needy, possessive superhero goes nuts when her boyfriend leaves her.

Imagine a female superhero who 'œwas not only able to stop crime and save the planet, but was also neurotic, possessive, and insanely jealous?' said Robert Koehler in Variety. The sexist answer proposed by My Super Ex-Girlfriend is oddly uninspired—particularly given director Ivan Reitman's customary flair for special effects and comedy, and writer Don Payne's track record as a writer for The Simpsons. Uma Thurman is the leather-clad, crime-fighting G-Girl by night and mousy art gallery curator Jenny Johnson by day. When she discloses her super-secret to bland love interest Matt (Luke Wilson), he's understandably excited. But his ardor is quickly dimmed by her clinginess. No danger of this flick 'œleaping tall buildings or scaling box office heights,' said Sheri Linden in The Hollywood Reporter. It's a 'œsour, joyless affair.' Somehow Reitman has sucked the charm from the entire cast. Theoretically, Jenny is the perfect roll for Thurman. Yet she comes off as an 'œunconvincing, ill-at-ease cartoon.' As for Wilson, he 'œmay not be the lousiest young-ish actor working in big studio pictures these days, but he's almost certainly in the top five,' said Eleanor Ringel Gillespie in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The role requires someone who's remotely lovable, and he doesn't qualify.
