1. MANCHESTER CITY CELEBRATE TITLE

Thousands of Manchester City fans were expected to turn out for an open top bus parade through this evening after City became champions for the first time in 44 years. City scored twice in stoppage time in a last-minute turnaround to beat Queen's Park Rangers and snatch the title away from arch-rivals Manchester United.

2. GREEK LEFT REFUSES AUSTERITY COALITION

The leader of Greece’s far-left party Syriza, Alexis Tsipras, has pulled out of today's coalition talks, plunging Greece into more political disarray and shortening the odds on the demise of the euro. The Democratic Left party also said it would not enter a coalition without Syriza. New elections now seem inevitable.

3. O'DONNELL HEAPS PRESSURE ON HUNT

Gus O'Donnell, the former Cabinet Secretary, has heaped pressure on Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, saying he should have known what his special adviser Adam Smith was up to when he gave News Corp daily updates during their bid for BSkyB. Commons speaker John Bercow later told Hunt he must answer questions, despite the ongoing Leveson Inquiry.

4. NURSES HECKLE ANDREW LANSLEY

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley was heckled and accused of lying at an appearance at the Royal College of Nursing's annual congress in Harrogate. His suggestion that patients had not noticed the £9bn in cuts introduced over the last two years was mocked, as were claims that the number of clinical staff was up by almost 4,000 since the 2010 election.

5. BRITISH SERVICEMEN KILLED BY AFGHAN POLICE

Two British servicemen, one from the 1st battalion the Welsh Guards and the other from the Royal Air Force, were shot dead on Saturday by Afghan policemen they were training in Helmand in the latest killing by local security forces of Nato allies, it was confirmed yesterday. One of the two killers died in a subsequent firefight.

6. THOMPSON QUITS YAHOO! IN DEGREE ROW

Yahoo! chief executive Scott Thompson has stepped down after just four months in the role amid claims his academic credentials were misrepresented. Although he has a degree in accounting there are references to a computer science qualification. Ross Levinsohn, head of global media at the Sunnyvale, California company, takes over on an interim basis.

7. WILLIAMS GP VICTORY MARRED BY FIRE

Venezuelan 'pay driver' Pastor Maldonado vindicated himself yesterday with a first GP win, and the first for his team Williams since 2004, at the Spanish GP yesterday. But 90 minutes later disaster struck when an electrical fault started a fire in fuel pumps at the team’s pits as they celebrated with champagne. Three crew were hospitalised.

8. NO MURDOCH DEAL, SAYS CAMPBELL

Alastair Campbell has told the Leveson Inquiry that there was "no express deal" between Tony Blair and Rupert Murdoch prior to the 1997 general election, when The Sun switched its support to Labour. He added that he and Blair often felt "distaste" when dealing with the media mogul and played down phonecalls before the invasion of Iraq.

9. 49 DECAPITATED BODIES FOUND IN MEXICO

The discovery of the decapitated bodies of 43 men and six women on a highway in Mexico south of the US border early yesterday morning raised the bar on the horror of the drug wars to new heights. Army and police closed the road between Monterrey and the border. The dead were victims of a war between rival drug gangs.

10. HOT TICKET: GARBAGE COMEBACK ALBUM

Not Your Kind of People, a new album from alternative rock band Garbage, is released today. The album comes after a seven-year hiatus from the multi-million album selling band. It features guitar-heavy tracks and singer Shirley Manson’s sweet-but-edgy vocals. “Spiky, stylish pop,” says The Guardian.
