1. UN LAUNCHES $301M PHILIPPINES APPEAL

The UN has launched an appeal for $301m to help relief efforts in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. More than 11 million people are believed to have been affected by the storm, which killed 10,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the situation as "heartbreaking".
