1. LIB DEMS CALL ON NICK CLEGG TO QUIT

Two Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidates are calling on Nick Clegg to stand down as party leader. Jackie Porter, the candidate for Winchester, and Ros Kayes, the would-be MP for West Dorset, say Clegg should go for the good of the party. Both are to stand in key swing seats. However, a party spokesman described the calls as “needless infighting”.

2. SIX KILLED IN CALIFORNIA SHOOTING

Six people were killed in a drive-by shooting in California on Friday evening. US police have confirmed that the killer was 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, the son of Hollywood filmmaker Peter Rodger, who was assistant director on The Hunger Games. The day before the attack, Rodger posted a video on YouTube threatening to kill "spoilt, stuck-up, blonde" women who had rejected him.

Voters see the Tories as lacking courage, rigour and clarity, says influential backbencher David Davis. Writing in the Sunday Times, the former leadership contender said the perceived weaknesses are to blame for the popularity of the “anti-political class movement” and Ukip. He called on David Cameron to “press the reset button” on European policy.

4. THREE KILLED IN JEWISH MUSEUM ATTACK

Three people were killed in a shooting at a Jewish museum in Belgium yesterday. Local Jewish community figure Joel Rubinfeld described the attack as “a terrorist act” and the result of a “climate of hate”. Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur also described the crime as a terrorism. Police are continuing to question one person detained shortly after the attack in the capital city of Brussels.

5. UKIP TO TARGET 20 COMMONS SEATS

Ukip is to target 20 parliamentary seats at next year’s general election, says The Observer. Using his party’s success in Thursday’s council elections as a springboard, Nigel Farage plans an all-out assault on the House of Commons, choosing mainly marginal seats in areas where it now has a strong base of councillors.

6. POPE IS TO VISIT BETHLEHEM

Pope Francis will visit the West Bank city of Bethlehem today as he continues his tour of the Middle East. He is due to lead an open-air mass at the city's Church of the Nativity for thousands of local Christians. He will also travel to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in Israel, meeting Bartholomew I, the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople in the latter city.

7. PARENTS SUE FOR TERM-TIME HOLIDAYS

A group of parents is to launch a legal challenge against Michael Gove’s crackdown on parents taking their children on holidays during school term time. The Sunday Times says the group is seeking a judicial review of the rules, claiming they are a breach of their human right to a family life. Lib Dem MP John Hemming is advising the parents.

8. PUTIN BITES BACK AT PRINCE CHARLES

Vladimir Putin says Prince Charles’s comparison of him to Adolf Hitler was “unacceptable” and “unroyal behaviour”. Five days after the Prince of Wales made the much-discussed comparison, Putin said the royal was “wrong” and behaving in a manner that was not befitting of “what monarchs do”. He added that he would not be guided by international criticism.

9. BBC IN ‘GIRL’ CENSORSHIP STORM

Did the BBC edit the word “girl” out of a documentary to avoid causing offence? In a documentary about the Commonwealth Games, first broadcast in April, the presenter joked about being beaten by a female judo champion. “I am not sure I can live that down – being beaten by a 19-year-old girl,” he said. However, when the show was repeated last week, the word was replaced by a moment’s silence.

10. BALE POWERS REAL TO EURO GLORY

Gareth Bale scored a crucial goal as Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final in Lisbon. The engrossing tie finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Extra-time goals from Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the win for Real. Earlier, QPR had sealed promotion to the Premier League, beating Derby in the play-off final at Wembley.
